Biography
PPS (Paul Pissety Sagna), also known as The Writah, is a Senegalese hip-hop artist whose journey began in the culturally rich environment of Rufisque. From a young age, he was captivated by music and influenced by artists like MC Solaar, despite his parents’ disapproval. At just 10 years old he created his first group, the Crazy Boyz, and later formed BA-TEEN and MESAH-GE, laying the foundations of his conscious, revolutionary artistic identity.
While studying Literature at Cheikh Anta Diop University, PPS developed his writing craft and became a leading voice in both hip-hop and graffiti in Rufisque through his collective SCRIB. His commitment to conscious rap, embodied in his concept “Guimi Guindi” (stay awake and raise awareness), propelled him onto major stages across Senegal. He was signed to the label 99 Jolof 4 Life, placed 3rd in the Nescafé African Revelation national finals, and released The Xtape, which earned him the title Hip Hop Revelation 2011.
Selected in 2012 by the U.S. State Department’s ONEBEAT program to represent West Africa on an American East Coast tour, PPS returned to create SUNU KADDU, a label and cultural initiative offering Rufisque’s first major recording studio and empowering youth through urban arts.
His 2015 album Xaatim ak Kalláma won Best Album of the Year at the Galsen Hip Hop Awards and led him to stages across Europe and Africa. In 2019 he released Made in Galsen, a live, percussion-rich project rooted in Senegalese identity and open to global influence.
Today, PPS continues evolving as a champion of conscious hip-hop. A “parliamentarian of the people,” he uses music to defend social values, give voice to the forgotten, and uphold the legacy of African hip-hop—proudly as a Pure Senegalese Product.
